Steve's News and the Sports Stuff

Well, this sports year has been a real bag of nuts. Most were pretty good, but a couple too bitter for my tastes. With that exciting introduction out of the way, here are the highlights:

Grandma Erickson left me a savings bond. I wanted to use it to buy something I would likely never buy for myself, but something I could use frequently. The item was a Kodak digital camera - a really nice one. I used the camera to record the entire baseball season for Brett's High School and American Legion baseball teams. After the season ended, I put all the pictures, newspaper clippings and statistics on a cd for the players and coaches. It really came out great. See it all by clicking here.

Our 2000 basketball season ended really well. The C Team I was assisting with my coaching friend, Steve Stansbury, finished with a 16-5 record. Most of them are now playing JV ball. They are an excellent example of how teamwork makes success. See their stats and picture by clicking here.

Bjorn and I played softball together, but this turned out to be one of the bitter nuts. Our team was placed in the most competitive league, but we just didn't have many players that enjoy tougher competition. Because of the no-show players and the dispirited play, we generally went down in flames every game. Next year? I don't know. Bj and I are talking about a new team made up of his friends. Sounds like a lot more fun to me.

Brett's baseball season was really enjoyable. Brett seems to have taken a serious interest in baseball and has improved dramatically. He is bigger and stronger. Best of all, he has a sense of leadership responsibility for the team. While the team finished in the middle of the pack, they beat everyone a couple times, even our previous nemesis, Service High. They have a bright season ahead to look forward to.

Basketball 2000-2001 I coached some really great kids in the YMCA basketball league. They went 12-0 and won their tournament. Then, I got a chance to coach the Bartlett C Team (freshmen and sophomores), an opportunity made possible by moving their practice schedule to evenings. My guys are inexperienced, but fun to work with. They will do fine. Unfortunately, Brett was cut in the varsity tryouts by new coaches that didn't know him. For a family that has been as dedicated as ours to the high school and the sport itself, it was a heartbreaking blow. I have no idea where basketball will go for us after this season.

So, there's my sports news for the year 2000. Some bitter nuts, as I said, but some really good ones, too. Merry Christmas.
