HAround Anchorage
.A popular 6 hour day
trip from Anchorage is the Portage Glacier and Big Game Alaska. The visitor's center at
Portage offers a free 20 minute award winning film 20 minutes after each hour. There are
exhibits in the center plus some great photo opportunities of icebergs that have calved
off the glacier. A cafe and gift shop is a short walk across the parking lot and offers a
wide assortment of native art, Alaskan gifts and a variety of sandwiches, soups, desserts
and beverages. The hour long and fully narrated boat tour to the glacier
departs at 12:00 noon, 1:30pm, and 3:00pm and is a short two mile ride to the docking
area. The lower deck of the boat is enclosed while the upper deck is open for unrestricted
viewing and photographing. Reservations are recommeded. The cost of the boat tour is
$25.00 dollars. Alyeska Ski Resort and the community of Girdwood is a fifteen minute ride
from Portage Glacier and has a number of gift shops in the area that are unique and
interesting. The Alyeska Prince Hotel has a tram that goes to the 2,300 foot level of Mt.
Alyeska for some fantastic views of the valley and glaciers in the area. The cost for the
tram ride is $18.00 per person. Big Game Alaska is unique in that is home of many Alaskan
Animals such as Moose, Caribou, Musk Ox and more. |
